Biography - Tunde Onakoya
Tunde Onakoya, born on October 6, 1994, in Ikorodu, Lagos, Nigeria, is a distinguished chess master, coach, and philanthropist. Growing up in the slum community of Isale Odo, he faced significant economic hardships that interrupted his early education. During a two-year hiatus from school, he discovered chess at a local barbershop, a game that would become a pivotal part of his life.
Determined to continue his education, Onakoya's mother secured a cleaning job at a nearby college in exchange for his tuition. This opportunity allowed him to hone his chess skills, leading to numerous tournament victories. He later earned a diploma in computer science from Yaba College of Technology, where he was a gold medalist in the Nigerian Polytechnic Games and the RCCG Chess Championship.
In September 2018, Onakoya founded "Chess in Slums Africa," a non-profit organization aimed at empowering children in impoverished communities through chess. The initiative has reached over 1,000 children across 11 African countries, securing lifelong scholarships for many participants.
On April 20, 2024, Onakoya set a Guinness World Record by completing a 60-hour chess marathon in New York's Times Square. This event not only surpassed the previous record of 56 hours but also raised significant funds to support educational initiatives for underprivileged children in Africa.
Beyond his organizational work, Onakoya serves on the board of "The Gift of Chess," a New York-based non-profit dedicated to global chess education. His efforts have garnered international recognition, including features on CNN's African Voices and other prominent media outlets.
Tunde Onakoya's journey from the slums of Lagos to international acclaim exemplifies the transformative power of resilience, education, and community engagement.
